After 520 wins under Hall of Fame coach Wayne Kreiger, Columbia City will be looking for its first under Amy Shearer, if the WCCS board OKs her at its meeting Monday.
The former player and assistant under Kreiger has been chosen as the heir apparent to Kreiger’s 33-year throne that is Lady Eagles basketball.
At Monday’s the Whitley County Consolidated Schools board meeting a vote will make it official effectively making Shearer head coach.
“It’s a very big position to fill no question,” Shearer said. “I’ve been fortunate enough to work under Coach Kreiger for eight years and what greater experience than to work with a Hall of Fame coach.”
The first-time head coach would take over for Kreiger who resigned in July to take the director of basketball operations position at Canterbury High School where his son Scott Kreiger is head coach.
Shearer spent the 2009 season and years prior as the junior varsity coach under Kreiger.
Before she was a coach for Kreiger she was a player during Columbia City’s streak of 13 consecutive sectional championships.
In her time as a player from 1985 to 1989, Shearer won four sectional championship and two regional titles with the Lady Eagles.
Out of all that, Shearer has picked up a few pointers from Kreiger along the way.
“We talked about coaching and I’ve always looked to him for advice about my coaching career,” Shearer noted of past conversations with Kreiger. “I think his attention to detail is something I’ve noticed the most along the way. Whether it’s in practice or before a game, we were always prepared.”
Before coming back to her alma mater, Shearer gained coaching experience at Huntington North High School, as the varsity assistant for the Lady Vikings basketball team.
As for the team she takes over, Columbia City comes off one of its best seasons in recent years going 15-7.
“We’ve got a lot of hardworking kids top to bottom,” Shearer said. “It’s a great group of kids and we’re excited.”
Currently, Shearer is a eighth- grade social studies teacher at Indian Springs Middle School.
