C.C.’s Veterans Marathon: Nets record turn-out

November 10, 2012

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s downtown is expected to be a little more crowded today than previous years for the Veterans Marathon.
The marathon, half-marathon and 5K, which are set to begin at 8 a.m., have nearly 800 runners signed up between the three races.
Last year’s marathon netted 218 runners, while 2012’s race has approximately 325 signed up for today’s race, according to event coordinator Gary Bird.
Bird said there are twice as many people signed up for the 5K.
Part of the raise in number this year comes from athletes who were scheduled to run in New York City’s Marathon, which added approximately 30-40 runners to the marathon list.
“We’ve had a lot of outside press because of the NYC issue,” Bird said. “Many people are coming from Chicago or Detroit who were scheduled to run in New York.”
