COLUMBIA CITY — No longer the little league facility of the Northeast Hoosier Conference, Columbia City baseball has the new look of a respectable diamond.
After new dugouts were installed last season, the final steps in a renovation project have parents of the baseball program asking for the community’s help to finish it.
Completed in late October, the latest phase features a new center block concession stand. To date construction costs have reached $7,000 and with double the space of its wooden predecessor, that was roughly 25 years old.
For the past 10 years or more, fans attending games used a portable restroom. The additional space added restrooms.
However, the final touch is an expensive one to make the restrooms functional. In order to complete a sewage line to the bathrooms, parents like Carla Clifford have been raising funds for the $7,066 price tag to install it.
The cost comes from how much pipe will have to be laid. The nearest sewage connection stretches the length of a football field. The new line would run from the football concession stand west of the football field and run east the length of the stadium out to the baseball field.
Clifford and others are close to their goal but need help in the final stretch.
“We have about $1,700 left to raise of the $7,000,” Clifford said. “Whether it’s $10 or $1,000 we’ll take it.”
Both individual and business donations are accepted. According to Clifford, all donations must be given through CCHS to athletic director Geoff Penrod for tax deductible purposes.
Donors can then request the donation go to the baseball concession stand fund.
“Our goal is to have it running before the season starts (in late March),” Clifford said.
Donations will be taken through the next month with a Feb. 28 goal or deadline.
