Columbia City’s Lady Eagle Softball team opened IHSAA Sectional play with a Monday afternoon game against a Bellmont squad that had beaten them late in the season by a 7-5 score.
In a game that saw more offense than defense from each team, the Eagles pushed across a run in the bottom of the seventh to break a 7-7 deadlock and advance to the Sectional semifinals on Thursday with an 8-7 win over the Squaws.
As has been the theme of late with the Lady Eagles, they fell behind early.
In the top of the first inning the Squaws put the leadoff runner on with a walk. A slap single by the next batter through an Eagle infield drawn in to defend against the bunt put runners at the corners.
A sacrifice scored the first Bellmont run and a single two batters later put the Squaws up 2-0 after their first at-bat.
