LIGONIER — Churubusco crowned two individual champions and took second place overall as a team at the Northeast Corner Conference (NCC) Wrestling Tournament Saturday.
The Eagles garnered 182.5 points as a team, placing them 14.5 behind champion Fremont.
The two champions for ‘Busco were Brian Richardson at 195 and Jason Nicodemus at 220. Richardson earned the crown with two pins and a 7-5 championship match decision over Zach Goodyear of West Noble, who had defeated Richardson at the conference meet last year.
Nicodemus pinned his way to the championship, earning all three of his victories by fall and gaining each pin in the first period of the match.
Churubusco wrestling coach Sam Riesen said his two champion grapplers had an outstanding tournament.
Although the Eagles finished second, their coach had higher aspirations coming into the meet.
Overall, the Eagles placed 13 wrestlers, including six who grabbed third-place honors. The six wrestlers who came in third were: Chase Downing at 126; Joey Heaton at 152; Travis Glick at 160; Brayden Shively at 170; Sam Siddons at 182 and Gunner Barnhart at 285.
Downing went 4-1 for the day, including two pins and a technical fall. Heaton was 3-1 for the tournament with two pins. Glick was 3-1 with all three victories coming by fall. Shively went 3-1 with one pin. Siddons was 4-1 with one pin and one major decision and Barnhart was 3-1 with three pins.
The Sectional Tournament is next on the calendar for the Eagles. That is Saturday at Carroll High School. Riesen hopes his team is ready.
There are 10 schools at the tournament Saturday. Riesen acknowledge that Carroll will be the favorite but after that it is wide open.
