MONROE — The Churubusco Lady Eagles began their “second season” with a trip to Adams Central High School to take on a statistically similar South Adams Lady Starfire squad with the winner advancing to meet host Adams Central in the semifinals.
’Busco’s season will continue as they jumped out to a big first quarter lead and used a stifling defense to take a 42-27 win over the Lady Starfires.
The Lady Eagles extended their defense keeping the Lady Starfires off balance the entire first half, holding South Adams to three first quarter points and only seven in the entire first half.
In the opening period, the Churubusco defense held the Starfires to 1-of-15 shooting from the field, while the offense put up 15 points of their own, creating a buffer that they maintained for most of the contest.
Savannah Labenz and Heather Monk tossed in four first-quarter points with Lacey Pulley and Haleigh Gross adding three, and Montana Martin scoring a single point to account for the 15-3 Churubusco lead at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter was more of the same as the ’Busco put up 12 points while holding the Starfires to a single field goal and four points.
Sophomore Kristine Bechtold scored six including a shot at the buzzer that gave the Lady Eagles a 27-7 lead at the half.
To start the second half Churubusco went into a slump, not scoring a field goal in the third quarter and shooting 0-for-9 from the field.
The Lady Eagles were able to maintain their lead in the final quarter running out the clock for the final 42-27 win.
