CHURUBUSCO — The Churubusco Lady Eagles basketball team honored its seniors in prime fashion Thursday night with a 49-23 win over South Adams.

Churubusco Head Coach Jamie Perlich said seniors Heather Monk, Haliegh Gross and Morgan Young have all made powerful contributions in their four years with the Lady Eagles.

Monk led ’Busco in scoring with 12 and Gross chipped in nine points of her own.

“It was nice to see the three seniors, on their special night, step up and play a great game,” Perlich said.

Young has spent much of the season on the sideline due to injury, but Perlich said she still makes major contributions.

“It was sad to see that Morgan couldn’t play at all on senior night,” Perlich said. “But she’s been a huge part of this team and still is a big part of the program even from the bench.”

Both teams struggled offensively in the first quarter; Churubusco with seven and the Lady Starfires had just two field goals.

South Adams started the second quarter with a four-point run to take the lead (8-7), but Pulley and Monk answered with eight points to take the lead back and carry ’Busco to a 10-point, 21-11 halftime lead.

The Lady Eagles outscored the Lady Starfires 14-5 in the third quarter.

“Our defense gets our offense going,” Perlich said. “We get a lot of confidence when we play well defensively.”

South Adams didn’t score a single field goal in the third quarter.
Monk started the quarter with four points in the first 1:30, followed by buckets from Gross, Montana Martin and Pulley.

“We got the ball into Heather and we started hitting some outside shots,” Perlich said.

The Lady Eagles continued their pounding in the final period, adding another 14 points and holding the Lady Starfires to seven.

Jacey Keener finished off scoring with 2:07 left in the game with a 3-pointer, giving Churubusco the 49-23 win.

Keener, along with teammate Savannah LaBenz, chipped in five points apiece for the Lady Eagles.

The Lady Eagles travel to Central Noble Saturday to face the 0-17 Lady Cougars.
