Circuit Court sees two trials in 2013

January 28, 2014

COLUMBIA CITY — After a year of no jury trials, Whitley County Circuit Court had one in 2013.

There were no jury trials in 2012, but in May of last year, George A. Martin, 56, was convicted by a jury of committing home improvement fraud.
There was also one bench trial in 2013.

For the year, there was a total of 131 new cases filed, and a total of 121 resolved. There were still 98 cases pending resolution as of Dec. 31, 2013.

This made 2013 a lighter year than 2012. There were 201 new filings in 2012. However, many of those were resolved the same year, as only 92 cases carried over into 2013, as opposed to 98 carrying over to 2014.

There were a total of six Class A felony cases resolved in 2013. One of those was a new filing for the year, which was resolved the same year, and that was Dean Pressler’s conviction for child molesting.
