City announces limb pickup dates

March 24, 2011

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City street crews will be making their annual rounds to gather limbs from the past winter, according to Street Superintendent Kelly Cearbaugh.
“We’ll have the sweeper out picking up sand and other stuff that accumulated over the winter,” said Cearbaugh to the Columbia City Common Council Tuesday during his department report.
Cearbaugh announced the limb pickup program, which begins April 4.
The program has been initiated as a means to dispose of limbs and branches from storm-related events and small pruning projects, according to Cearbaugh.
The crews will circulate the city during the first full week of each month beginning in April and running through October.
Properties bordered by an all alley should have their limbs placed along that alley.
Cearbaugh said limbs will not be picked up along the street for those properties.
Properties bordered by streets only will have their limbs collected along the curb as in the past.
The city reminds residents not to place limbs in the roadway.
According to the program’s guidelines, acceptable items are bushes without roots and limbs of up to four inches in diameter.
The program will be conducted during the weeks of April 4, May 2, June 6, July 4, Aug. 1, Sept. 5 and Oct. 3
The street department will not pick up:
• Piles larger than a pickup truck load.
• Brush from fence-row clearing.
• Trees and logs.
• Branches left from contractor-provided tree removal.
• Bushes with roots attached.
Cearbaugh reminds residents to have their limbs out by 7 a.m. on the first day of the scheduled pickup.
Once the limb pickup begins, Cearbaugh said mulch will begin to be available by the middle of April from 8 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday in the back of Morsches Park.
