WARSAW — Heading into Saturday’s boys’ swimming finals at Warsaw, Columbia City had high hopes with the top six seeds in several events.
By the end of the day, the Eagles were dealt a narrow miss for the state finals.
“It was a great season and our boys did extremely well,” Columbia City head coach Phil Stanczak said. “We came close in a couple of events to going to state individually but came up just a bit short.”
Three school records helped the Eagles finish third behind Warsaw and Culver Academy. The finish is the best in more than eight years for City.
Senior Kevin Hershberger was part of all three records. His time of 1:05.29 in the 100-meter breaststroke landed him in second-place and his own school record.
Hershberger joined Cole Smith and Garrett Vandersaul to pick up two more records in the 200 individual medley relay (1:47.43) and 200 freestyle relay (1:34.87). Devin Moore was the fourth leg in the IM while Kyle Mertz was part of the 200 free record.
Smith missed his own individual trip to state by one placing. Smith took second in the 50 free (22.47) while also grabbing third in the 100 free (50.25).
Other top finishers: Hershberger fourth (200 IM), Tucker Daniel seventh (200 free), Devin Moore eighth (100 backstroke).
