City Fire Dept. enforces code

COLUMBIA CITY — Strip malls in Columbia City are now required to post addresses on rear-entry doors.

According to Indiana Fire Code, buildings with more than three lessees must have an address posted on all doors in the back of the building.

Columbia City Fire Chief Tom LaRue said the addresses are beneficial to many agencies, but especially emergency crews who may need to make rear entry on a building.

“If a dispatcher tells us we need to go to the back door of a certain business, the addresses help us know which door is which,” LaRue said. “Otherwise, it’s just another door on the back of a building.”
