City looking for ways to reduce gasoline use

March 25, 2011

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City Mayor Jim Fleck is calling on his town’s department heads to come up with ways to help reduce “pain at the pump.”
The mayor said earlier this week at the regular meeting of the Columbia City Common Council, and reiterated on Friday to the Board of Works and Safety, there is seemingly no end in sight to elevating gas prices.
“We do have a need to create a plan within your department,” Fleck told the town’s department heads Friday morning.
Fleck said he realizes a “one size fits all” approach will not work.
“Every department has different gas consumption needs, we realize that,” he said.
“But we need to get a strategy around.”
Fleck said he has talked to other communities about their ideas for reducing gasoline consumption and also commented that New Haven is starting a vehicle take-home program.
“As we see gas prices continue to rise, approaching four dollars a gallon, and certainly $3.60, I would like your suggestions by next week, so we can make sure that we manage as gas prices go up.”

Gas prices are in the stratosphere, which means more individuals than ever are looking into option gasoline choices. For diesel automobile owners, biodiesel is an environmentally conscious option that costs less than $1 per gallon. Biodiesel gasoline can even be made at home. While there are pros and cons to the process, it's hard to deny that running a diesel automobile on biofuel is cheaper in the long run than gasoline. I read this here: Make your own biodiesel fuel and save big money

It is indeed a better idea to reduce gasoline use and start electric cars that runs with a battery or solar power. Using this can also help to reduce the pollution also saving energy and money. These days we can see electric cars being popular because it doesn't require a gasoline at all. Many underdeveloped countries are also using this type of vehicle to minimize the pollution and save energy. Recently U.S. president Barrack Obama has announced a major step regarding fuel efficiency policy which will not only reduce the dependency of US on oil but also will be in the line of mitigating ongoing climate crisis. So, now the time has come to adopt holistic approach in whatever way, be it biogas or any fuel efficient mechanism like diesel exhaust fluid will be highly sustainable for all-from individual to global from economical to environmental.

Maybe they should use their own car in going to Fort Wayne. I have seen them roaming the town on many occasions with family in the car, so we know it is not "official business"

How about having city police and other officials use their own vehicles for personal use. I see them driving with their families in city vehicles to schools, to stores etc.
