CITY PLAN: City considers amendment to sign ordinance

COLUMBIA CITY — Amendments to Columbia City’s sign ordinance continue to be a topic of discussion for the Columbia City Plan Commission.

Part of the sign ordinance being examined is related to electronic messaging centers.

“Our current ordinance does not specifically deal with that,” said Dave Sewell, executive director of Whitley County Planning and Building. “We thought we needed some provisions in there that would give us some restriction and control over it. What we are trying to do is allow electronic message centers as designed, but with some kind of regulation, so there is some control and it doesn’t get out of hand.”

Proposed regulations would affect the size of the sign and how much time it takes to display the message. Part of the size is connected to the location of the business and the speed limit for the road.
