City runs to second in Boiler country

August 30, 2010

Eagles Brendon Zoltek finished 20th overall in the boys race as Columbia City’s top runner Saturday at Purdue.

WEST LAFAYETTE — Four points was the difference for Columbia City cross country over the weekend.
On Saturday, the Eagle squads traveled to Boiler country to take on a field with ranked teams.
Despite having runners take the top two spots, the Lady Eagles  day was capped off in second-place, just four points behind No. 18 West Lafayette, 75-71.
Ranked No. 23 themselves, the Lady Eagles beat out No. 7 Crown Point who finished four points back in third-place.
Columbia City did the brunt of its damage with its newcomers.
Freshmen Samantha Roush and Brooke Werstler helped the Lady Eagles take three positions in the top 11.
“It was our best race to date,” Columbia City head coach Bob Fahl said. “To go one-two in a field like that was tremenedous.”
After placing second in each of her first two races as a high schooler, Roush won her first race Saturday with a time of 19:13.
Just 20 seconds back was senior Renee Menzie at 19:33.
Werstler took 11th overall out of 282 runners with her time of 20:34.
Other notable finishers were: Samantha Engle 22nd, Erin Knepple 35th, Carlee Hearld 36th, Heather Shew 58th.
The boys squad finished the day 8th in a field of 13 teams that was led by No. 11 South Bend St. Joesph.
The Eagles put four runners in the top 51 runners with Brendon Zoltek out in front of the City pack placing 20th overall at 17:24.
Other notable finishes were: Evan Harney 37th, Adam Bernhard 40th, Trevor Maggart 51st, Ian Rooda-Baker 94th.
