City’s e-mail filter worth the cost

December 6, 2013

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s Director of Communications, Terry Wherry, had some impressive statistics to present to the Common Council last week.

Ten years ago, the city invested in an e-mail filter company, Preferred IT Group, to protect the city.

The overall cost for the program is $1,800 per year, and officials said the service is well worth the money. “The cost is benefiting us,” Wherry said. “It’s taken care of a lot of spam.”

More than 1,630,000 spam e-mails have been blocked, compared to 133,000 e-mails received. IAll city employees with e-mail accounts sent out a total of 42,000 emails.

The program also managed to block 80 e-mails with viruses.

The city has 102 e-mail accounts
