COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City Rotarians and Sherri Grim from Sherri’s Place Restaurant in Columbia City are talking turkey.
Thanksgiving turkey, that is.
The Rotary Club is joining forces with Sherri’s Place to offer a community Thanksgiving meal from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thanksgiving Day, for anyone in the community, including those who can’t travel to Sherri’s Place for the meal.
“Some have money, but don’t have family,” said Grim, and gave the invitation to “come and eat!”
The meals are free, but those who can may give a donation which will be given to a local food bank.
Last year, the two entities held separate meals at two locations, but felt joining forces would cut costs and the workload. Together they fed more than 430 and organizers expect 450 to 500 this year, including delivered meals.
Meals on wheels recipients will have meals delivered, according to Gene Smith, Rotarian, and anyone else living in Whitley County wanting delivery that day, needs to call Sherri’s Place after 10 a.m. at 244-7878 or Jacie Worrick at 244-6174. Anyone interested in volunteering to help serve on that day should contact Sherri at the above number to reserve a spot.
One family was traveling last year and stopped in to eat, not knowing of the free meal, according to Grim, and received a warm Thanksgiving welcome to Whitley County to their surprise.
No one should miss Thanksgiving dinner this year, just call for delivery or come out to Sherri’s Place for food and camaraderie from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thanksgiving Day, or join in the servers for a different kind of warm feeling inside.
