Col. City swim season ends at state finals

Senior Cole Smith competed in three events at the state finals and broke his own school record in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing 19th.

INDIANAPOLIS — Columbia City’s standout performance in the post-season came to an end Friday at the swimming state finals in Indianapolis.

The Eagles broke six school records at sectionals and advanced to state in three events.

Senior Cole Smith participated in three events in Indianapolis, the 50- and 100-yard freestyle and the 200-yard freestyle relay.
Smith broke his own school record, set at sectionals, in the 50 free with a time of 21.76.

Smith was seeded 28th going into the meet and improved to finish 19th.
He placed 25th in the 100 free. The 200 relay team of Smith, Foster Eber, Kyle Mertz and Tucker Daniel came in 32nd.

“They did great and it was awesome to have them make it to state,” Columbia City Swim Coach Kristen Swonger said.
