COLUMBIA CITY — Churubusco’s and Columbia City’s tennis team’s opened their season’s with an intra-county match Tuesday night at DeVol Field in Columbia City.
The host team took a lopsided 5-0 win, despite a close No. 1 doubles match.
Columbia City’s No. 1 doubles team of Mason Coverstone and Blake Fearnow won the first game, 6-4, but Churubusco’s Brandon Wormcastle and Landon Pearson battled back to win the second game 6-3.
Columbia City’s pair retaliated with a 6-2 win in the second game to take the match. The home team swept No. 1 and No. 2 singles, with Derek Hinen defeating Luke Lillmars 6-0, 6-0, and Niko Rongos beating Cody Luttman 6-0, 6-0.
In No. 3 singles, Columbia City’s Drew Benedict won 6-3, 6-1 over Landon Lillmars of ’Busco.
The No. 2 doubles team of Austin Paul and Daniel Woll beat Grant Stephan and Brian Murphy of Churubusco by a 6-1, 6-4 score. Columbia City is at Warsaw tonight at 4:30 p.m. and Churubusco travels to South Side in Fort Wayne on Thursday.
