Columbia City wins last match at Eagle Glen

May 23, 2012

COLUMBIA CITY — Three Columbia City linksters played their last match as Eagles at Eagle Glen Tuesday night against Wawasee.

Columbia City, led by senior Dustin Parrett, won by four strokes over the Warriors in the back nine, 175-179.

Parrett shot a season-low 40. Fellow seniors Drew Burnsworth and Tucker Daniel also wrapped up the home season with competitive scores.

“It was a good way for Parrett to go out,” Columbia City Head Coach Andrew Thompson said.

Burnsworth shot a 44 and Daniel carded a 53 in the junior varsity match. Drew Benedict was Columbia City’s second best with a 43 and Trent Murphy had a 48 to round off the Eagles’ varsity score.

Derek Philbee had a 51 and Tanner Daniel shot a 58. The win was the Eagles second home victory of the season, after a struggling year at Eagle Glen (2-7 at home).

“We have to be happy with the win,” Thompson said. “We’re looking to build upon it.”

After the first two scores came in, there was a two-shot differential between the teams.

“It was a close match,” Thompson said. “The win was in doubt until the fifth and sixth guys came in.”

Columbia City’s Max Dryer has been out due to injury, and Thompson said he is hoping to get him back before the last match.

The Eagles have one more match before sectionals next Saturday, traveling to Cobblestone to play Central Noble.

“Cobblestone is a good placeto play before sectionals at Stonehenge,” Thompson said. “We’re going to have to find a way to beat Central Noble, they’re playing well.”

Columbia City travels to Stonehenge tomorrow to practice for the competitive Warsaw sectional.

“We’re getting down to the end of the road and we have a tough sectional field,” Thompson said. “Warsaw, Triton, Tippecanoe Valley, Culver Military Academy; they’re all tough.”
