COLUMBIA CITY — She’s only lived here for three years, but Natalie Lewis cares a lot about Whitley County and its people.
Now, Lewis is president of the Whitley County Domestic Violence Task Force (WCDVTF), an organization with a mission to “reduce the impact and frequency of domestic violence incidents in Whitley County.”
Formerly of Iowa and Minnesota, Lewis draws on her own experiences with domestic violence as she helps local victims through the WCDVTF.
She recently spoke with The Post & Mail about herself, domestic violence and working with the Task Force.
The Post & Mail: Why did you decide to get involved in WCDVTF?
Natalie Lewis: “When we first moved here, we attended the Old Settlers Days (American Legion) Parade, and I received information about the task force then from a member who was walking in the parade. We also received the Post and Mail, and I saw they were looking for task force members. I called and was able to attend a meeting and then do some training to be a victim’s assistant.
I am a former victim from more than 23 years ago. At that time, in Steele County, Minn., there was a women’s resource center that was of great help to me. I was very excited to see something similar in this county!”
P&M: How has the WCDVTF impacted the county?
NL: “The resources and listening ear we can provide to victims is amazing. There are some wonderful organizations that we partner with, including, but not limited to the Lighthouse Shelter and the YWCA of Northern Indiana (for advocacy, shelter out of this county if needed and training programs.)
