COSTS TO CONSTRUCT: Whitko officials open bids for school building projects

May 30, 2014

Pictured is a large bulletin board hanging in the hallway at South Whitley Elementary School displaying several questions regarding the renovations about to take place at the school.

Construction bids were received and discussed at a recent Whitko Community School Corporation board meeting for building projects at both Pierceton and South Whitley Elementary schools totaling $18,659,760.

Although contracts have not been released, school leaders discussed the bids submitted and approved WCSC administration to award the contracts subject to discussion and approval.

As construction costs were revealed, WCSC Superintendent Steve Clason confirmed that numbers were higher than anticipated, but most of the increase was due to additional foundation and ground work needed at Pierceton Elementary School’s site.

“What you have to remember is that this is a worse case scenario,” said Clason. “Once approved, this is the max they will spend. We anticipate that the work gets underway and the numbers come down.”
