County back-bills for incorrect property taxes

COLUMBIA CITY — Property tax bills are due Tuesday for Whitley County residents.

However, according to County Auditor Jennifer McGuire, 72 properties received a tax bill for back taxes accrued during the last three years.

The difference in taxed amount comes from homestead exemptions filed incorrectly.

“The Indiana State code only allows an individual one homestead credit,” McGuire said. “That is allowed for the primary residence only. It is not allowed for a secondary property such as a lake home or rental property.”
