COLUMBIA CITY — There were 350 listings of homesteads in Whitley County that were not verified as of tax bill time.
For these individuals, they will now have a higher tax bill to pay if they do not clarify with the auditor’s office.
Whitley County Auditor Jen McGuire said the biggest problem could be how long it takes for the person to realize that there is an issue.
“My only fear is that the homeowner escrows their taxes into their house payment and will not know of the increase until they have a shortfall in their escrow account,” she said. “Then, their house payment will increase to cover the shortage, and they will have no knowledge of that until next year when the mortgage company wants to increase the house payment to cover the shortfall.”
Apart from that, McGuire hopes homeowners realize the higher tax bill and either affirm they should be off the list or clarify with the auditor’s office.
