COLUMBIA CITY — Just past the halfway point of the year 2013, the economy has an improved atmosphere, particularly on the local level.
Around the nation, surveys indicate increased optimism economically as the year 2013 reached July, and the local atmosphere is no different. In Whitley County, there are reasons to smile about the cash climate for area citizens.
“There are a number of indicators that do suggest the overall economy is moving in the right direction,” said Alan Tio, Whitley County Economic Development Corporation president. “What we see here at the local level seems to be evidence of that.”
Specifically, Tio cited a number of manufacturing firms that work with the EDC that are adding jobs and equipment.
“Month-to-month job creation seems strong,” he said. “There are more people entering the labor force.”
Unemployment had been at a high of 14 percent during the recession, from a low of 4.5 percent.
“We took our hits,” Tio said. “We saw some companies depart.”
A big difference though, was not the recession, but the recovery.
