COUNTY UNEMPLOYMENT: Lowest in 4 years

COLUMBIA CITY — Unemployment numbers for October are in — with Whitley County seeing a new low of 6.8 percent.“This is pretty significant,” said Whitley County Economic Development Corporation (EDC) President Alan Tio. “From what I understand, this is the lowest we’ve seen in nearly four years.”According to the EDC, employment for Whitley County was down 7.6 percent in September of this year, making a difference of nearly one percent.“A one percent difference is a couple hundred people,” said Tio.“In 2008, unemployment was below five percent, but we’re making some progress,” he said.For October, the labor force in Whitley County for October totaled 17,933 — with 16,720 employed and 1,213 unemployed.For a more in depth look at this story, see the Nov. 22 issue of The Post and Mail.
