COLUMBIA CITY — The Whitley County Commissioners updated a resolution declaring the county’s office as a “drug-free” workplace.
The resolution was presented to the commissioners by Matt Showalter, community development director for Region III-A of the Economic Development District & Regional Planning Commission.
Region III-A worked with the county to update the resolution as part of a grant application with the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs.
The county is seeking a $250,000 Community Economic Development fund grant and the drug-free workplace resolution is a grant requirement, according to Showalter.
The resolution, entitled 2010-29, was adopted by the three-man panel Monday at the board’s regular meeting.
The resolution said the county “makes a commitment to provide employees a safe working environment, to ensure that employees, equipment and operating practices comply with health and safety standards, and to maintain public confidence in the county and its employees…”
In the resolution, the commissioners resolved to offer employees assistance in dealing with alcohol and drug abuse problems.
The last declaration, according to the resolution was at least 20 years old.
The county already has a drug-free workplace policy in the county employee handbook, according to the resolution.
