IN COURT: Man sentenced 1.5 years for theft

COLUMBIA CITY — A man who stole credit cards and other possessions from a person in December was sentenced Monday.

Cruz T. Johannsen, 22, of Fort Wayne, was sentenced to the Whitley County Jail for 1.5 years, with six months to serve and one year suspended.
He will serve that time consecutive to a case he is facing in Allen County.
As part of a plea agreement, other charges against Johannsen, which include burglary and two counts of fraud on a financial institution, were dismissed. Johannsen was represented by Brad Baber.

Baber said his client should receive a light sentence, since he has children, a job and regretted his actions.

“He had no idea he was going to steal property from someone’s home, and he regrets it,” Baber said.

Johannsen also apologized for his actions.
Prosecutor Matt Rentschler said Johannsen had a history of a similar juvenile offense.
