IN COURT: Mother of abused child to stand trial

October 12, 2013

COLUMBIA CITY — A woman accused of felony neglect of a dependent in connection with a local sex abuse case had a trial date set in Whitley County Circuit Court Monday.

Joy Hughes, 37, of Kendallville, will stand trial Jan. 14 and 15, 2014. The final pretrial conference will be Jan. 6, 2014.

Hughes’ attorney is Brad Baber. Felony neglect of a dependent is a Class C felony, which carries a sentence range of two to eight years if she is found guilty.

Hughes was charged with abandoning her daughter to the care of Dean Pressler in 2008. Pressler was subsequently arrested in January of this year for multiple sex-crime charges with this child.

Pressler was given a 60-year prison sentence in August.
