DIFFERENCE MAKER: Teacher makes a lasting impression

COLUMBIA CITY ­ — Roxanne Thomas is a second-grade teacher at Coesse Elementary School and has taught for 40 years in Whitley County.

Administrators, students and faculty will miss the long-time educator when she retires in June.

But it’s not necessarily the longevity of Thomas in the classroom that makes her CES’s Difference Maker. Her dedication to her students puts Thomas in a class all her own.

“She approaches her work with a singular dedication to her students,” said Laura McDermott, CES principal. “She is tenacious when it comes to her students mastering second-grade standards.

“Each day, Mrs. Thomas is the first to arrive in the building, and is always one of the last to leave. She approaches change as a new challenge, and continues to work to incorporate new information into her practices.”

McDermott estimates that Thomas has educated more than 800 children during her tenure with Whitley County Consolidated Schools.
