District is a cross-section of County

April 9, 2014

WHITLEY COUNTY — Members of the Solid Waste District Board approved raising the recycling user fee for Whitley County residents from $42 to $53 a year.

A public hearing was held Nov. 18, 2013, and the increase was passed. Residential owners will see the change on the property tax bills due in May.

County Councilman Glen LaRue is the representative from the council that was appointed to the board.

He said the charge for recycling, although it appears as a line item on the bills, is not a tax, but a fee.

“This is a fee that is assessed to every residential dwelling,” LaRue said. “We, as a board, voted for the increase once we looked at the expenses. We had costs we needed to cover.”
