COLUMBIA CITY — As farmers try to learn how to manage their way through the destruction caused by the summer’s intense drought, Purdue Extension offices across the state are offering a hand by providing instructional advice through meetings.
According to the Associated Press, farmers have been attending these meetings recently held throughout Indiana to listen to speakers give talks on crops, livestock, finances and insurance. As the drought affected different areas of the state more severely than others, the meetings, while focusing on the same topics, provide farmers with another resource to consider the local problems that exist.
While most of these talks are being held as far away as Terre Haute, Indianapolis or Hendrick’s County, Whitley County farmers have a chance to attend a closer event offering helpful resources.
The 2012 Regional PAC Field Day, one of five regional events being held in Indiana this year, will take place Thursday at the Northeast-Purdue Agricultural Center (NEPAC), located at 4821 E. 400 S. in Columbia City.
“Our representative is going to be there to talk about drought resources,” said David Addison, Whitley County Extension Educator. “It is not as big as the other meetings taking place, but it is something close that will provide good information.”
Addison said anyone with questions or concerns about their crops, should consider the event.
Morning sessions will include the following “Updates for Corn and Soybean Weed Management” by Bill Johnson, Botany and Plant Pathology Dept., Purdue University; “Northern Indiana Pest Scouting and Control Strategies” by Christian Krupke, Entomology Dept., Purdue University and “Soil Fertility Issues in Corn and Soybean Production” by Jim Camberato, Purdue Agronomy Dept.
To register for the event, call the Huntington Extension Office at 358-4826 by Aug. 13.
