Eagle runners get early test

   Coming off its best season in over 20 years, Columbia City cross country came in with bigger and brighter expectations for 2010.
   Preseason ranked No. 14 in the girls side of things, the Lady Eagles got an early test in the season with     sectional foe Huntington North meeting them at the DeKalb Invitational.
   A meet scored only in individual times, No. 14 Columbia City filled three of the top five finishing positions.  
Freshman Samantha Roush led the Columbia City pack finishing second only to Carroll’s Brianna Johnson with a time of 19:49.8.
   The Lady Eagles one-two senior combo of Laken Lefever and Renee Menzie contributed the other two places. Lefever was just ahead of Menzie in fourth overall at 20:02.9.     
   “The girls ran great,” said Columbia City Bob Fahl said. “It’s just a tremendous start to the season for everyone.” 
   Huntington North countered filling up five slots in the top 10. The Vikings took sixth through 10th with Natalie Spahr leading the way just ahead of Becca Goodman at 20:24.6.
   Samantha Engle gave Columbia City its third runner in the top 20. Freshman Brooke Werstler finished her first high school race in 40th at 21:56.07. Sophomore Carlee Hearld was three spots back in 43rd.
   For the boys’ race, the Eagles had three runners finish in the top 50 of a talented field.
   Brendon Zoltek made a solid return with a team best finish of 30th at 18:13.6.
   Evan Harney brought a new face to the Eagles lineup finishing 42nd as a freshman.
   Senior Trevor Maggart was next in line at 49th with a time of 18:54.5.
   Columbia City gets another shot at Huntington North with the Vikings hosting an invitational Saturday. The Eagles picked up the invitational after dropping its match later in the season against North Side and South Side.
