HUNTERTOWN — For the third year in a row, the Columbia City baseball team is sectional runner-up.

This year, the Eagles came closer to hoisting the sectional trophy than they have in either of the two previous years.

Columbia City lost to Carroll 6-3 Tuesday night in the sectional championship game.

It was the second game of the day for the Eagles, who earned their way into the finals after defeating Snider earlier that day 6-0 in the semifinals.

“To have a showing like we did in our sectional, you can’t really ask for a whole lot more,” said Columbia City Head Coach Zac Bireley.

The Eagles wrap up a 16-10 2013 campaign that included finishing third in the Northeast Hoosier Conference, behind only Carroll and Norwell, and placing four players on All-NHC teams.

“I don’t know the last time that Columbia City has represented itself this well in the conference,” Bireley said.

“From the beginning, I didn’t know what to expect from this squad. For a lot of these guys, this was their first year at the varsity level, yet they responded well to everything.”

The sectional championship game began at 9:15 p.m. and finished after 11 p.m.
