Edith Beard, 99

Edith J. Beard, 99, of Columbia City, died at 4:20 a.m. Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at Miller’s Merry Manor where she had been a resident since April 2005.
She was born Nov. 26, 1911 in Whitley County, a daughter of William R. and Elsie (Fisher) Hively. Her formative years were spent in Thorncreek Township where she attended the Hoops School. She completed her education at Columbia City High School.
On Sept. 29, 1928 she was united in marriage to Alva C. Beard. They made their home in Larwill until 1942 when they moved to Columbia City. Mr. Beard died Feb. 12, 1982.
She was employed at Blue Bell, Jones Bakery, Whitley County Memorial Hospital as a cook and served as an Avon representative.
Her memberships include Columbia City United Methodist Church.
Surviving relatives include two sons, Philip (Jessie) Beard of Columbia City and Thomas (Lynn) Beard of Spooner, Wis.; five grandchildren, Michael (Karen) Beard, Brenda (Abbey) Gross, Douglas (Beth) Beard, Timothy (Cindy) Beard and Tawnya (Scott) Kieffer; 13 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by six siblings, Walter Hively, Clarence Hively, Irvin Hively, Void Hively, Grace VanVoorst and Alton Hively.
The funeral service will be at noon Saturday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The burial will be in South Park Annex Cemetery. The visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the funeral home.
