EEL RIVER TRAIL: Friends update newest project; meeting Thursday will detail South Whitley paved trail

January 7, 2012

This abandoned railroad trestle will be a feature of the Eel River Trail in South Whitley. The trail will wind through gorgeous woodland settings.

SOUTH WHITLEY – Last October the Friends of the Eel River Trail obtained a 1,600-foot length of the abandoned railbed of the Eel River Railroad in South Whitley.
This parcel of land was previously owned by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
A gravel path runs along the railbed from Calhoun Street in South Whitley through beautiful quiet woods to the old railroad trestle east of town.
The Friends of the Eel River Trail will pave this trail segment in the spring of 2012. Once the trail is paved, it will be open for non-motorized recreational use, including walking, running, bicycling and skateboarding.

Those curious about the trail project in South Whitley, please attend a public meeting at the South Whitley Library on Thursday, Jan 12. The meeting runs from 6 to 8 p.m.
Those not able to attend the public meeting, please visit for information, and send donations to Friends of the Eel River Trail Inc., PO Box 234, Columbia City, IN 46725.
The Friends need to raise $50,000 from businesses, foundations, and the public to make this trail possible.
