ENROLLMENT: Total WCCS enrollment down with large 2012 graduating class

October 5, 2012

COLUMBIA CITY — According to Whitley County Consolidated Schools Superintendent Dr. Patricia O’Connor, the ADM (Average Daily Membership) for WCCS is down with the number for total enrollment down 25.
“We had a large senior class graduating 292 and 241 first graders coming in so we have fifty-one kids right there,” said O’Connor. “Then we’ve got ins and outs in each grade level, but nothing catastrophic.”
O’Connor said there were also 15 students who graduated early as well as six exchange students.
“The good news is last year we had 243 kindergarten students and this year we have 280 kindergarten students,” said O’Connor. “So on the plus side, we have 37 additional students.”
While the district is down in enrollment numbers, O’Connor said the large number of kindergarten students is going to help WCCS receive additional funding.
“Another interesting statistic is we have 45 students from out of the district, and we have 91 preschool students, which is also good,” said O’Connor.
As far as class sizes are concerned, O’Connor said WCCS is close to their target.
“The target size was between 18 and 22 for each class,” said O’Connor. “If you look from school to school, we are in pretty good shape.”
According to O’Connor, most classes that tend to be large are the advanced classes.
