COLUMBIA CITY â€” Evelyn R. Winebrenner, 82, of rural Columbia City, died at 2:42 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011 at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne where she was admitted Oct. 27.
She was born Nov. 6, 1928 in Elkhart County, a daughter of Cecil and Faith (Miller) Phend.
As a young girl, her family moved to Merriam. She graduated from Wolf Lake High School.
On May 29, 1949 she was united in marriage to Tyrus A. Winebrenner. They made their first home at Bear Lake, later moving to a farm in York Township, Noble County for 13 years.
They returned to Merriam for a year before they moved to the Winebrenner farm in Noble County in 1963 until 1989 when they moved to Crooked Lake.
In January, 1998, they moved into Columbia City. Mr. Winebrenner died Nov. 12, 2000.
She was a member of Merriam Christian Chapel Church where she was a Sunday School teacher for many years and sang in the church choir.
Surviving relatives include four children, Nick E. Winebrenner of Tulsa Okla., Steven A. (Cynthia) Winebrenner of Churubusco, Douglas J. (Karen) Winebrenner of Fort Wayne and Jody M. Rex of Albion; nine grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and three sisters, Madelyn Walter of Columbia City, Josephine Halter of Fort Wayne and Betty Pepple of Hicksville Ohio.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Phend.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Merriam Christian Chapel Church, 3985 S U.S. 33 with visitation one hour prior to service.
The burial will be in Christian Chapel Cemetery, Merriam. The visitation will also be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City.
