Embers fly from a utility pole Wednesday night in Churubusco as a transformer exploded, causing power outages throughout the town. The pole caught on fire at approximately 9 p.m. Firemen were unable to extinguish the fire, and had to wait an hour for the electrical company to cut the power. The secondary transformer blew, creating a fireworks show and cutting power to parts of Churubusco at approximately 9:45 p.m. According to emergency radio traffic, the electric company, AEP, killed the primary power minutes before a dangerous explosion. The burning pole, which had to be replaced, is a central location for electricity for the town, leaving Churubusco without power for much of the night.
