CHURUBUSCO — A Churubusco man died Tuesday afternoon when he crashed his vehicle after allegedly fleeing police.

At approximately 1:54 p.m., Churubusco Town Marshal Mike Engle was attempting to pull over Tristan Bender, 26, who was allegedly driving at a high rate of speed on County Road 150 N., near Johnson Road.
Police say Bender was attempting to elude Engle, when he crossed the centerline, then went off the north side of the road where his vehicle struck a tree head-on.

Police say Bender wasn’t wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle.

He was transported to Parkview Regional Medical Center by helicopter, but was pronounced dead a short time later. Indiana State Police Sergeant Aaron Cook, who is investigating the case, said in a press release that it is not yet known whether drugs or alcohol were involved.

Assisting at the scene were the Whitley County Sheriff’s Department, Whitley County EMS and Churubusco Fire Department.
