First snow results in spate of craches

COLUMBIA CITY — Trees, poles and guard rails took a beating over the weekend as the first snowfall of the season made travel slippery for local drivers.The Whitley County Sheriff’s Department reported that officers responded to at least 29 slide-offs and two minor injury accidents once the snow started falling Saturday.Columbia City police reported no weather-related accidents over the weekend.Two of the county’s weather-related crashes involved minor injuries.One person was injured when the vehicle he was in collided with a state highway truck at 6:36 p.m. Sunday. No details were available this morning.A second minor injury accident occurred at 10:08 a.m. Saturday on Lincolnway West, near Wolf Road.A three-year-old boy was slightly injured when the car he was riding in left the road and slid into some trees. The car was driven by 26-year-old Brandi Baughman of Kimmell. Snow is expected to continue falling through Tuesday as the area is under a lake effect snow advisory. Drivers should use caution as lake effect snow falls in bands, meaning some areas may get more snow or heavier snow than other areas.
