Floyd A.R. Bolinger, 89, a resident of South Whitley, died at 3:20 p.m. Sunday, April 3, 2011 at The Oaks where he had been a resident since February.
He was born March 22, 1922 in Huntington County, a son of the late Noah E. and Iva Dove (Pence) Bolinger. As a young boy the family moved to North Manchester where his father entered the sheet metal trade. As a junior in high school, the family moved to a farm south of South Whitley. He graduated from South Whitley High School with the Class of 1940.
He began his work career in farming. On Dec. 31, 1942 he was united in marriage to Ruth Elouise Gilbert. They made their home in South Whitley.
In 1943, he joined his father in the sheet metal fabrication business in South Whitley known as Bolinger Tin Shop. In addition to sheet metal work, they did furnace work, down spouting and metal roof repair. In 1956, they moved to their present location on State Street in South Whitley and expanded into Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC). In 1962, Floyd and Elouise bought the business from his parents and it is still in operation today owned by son, Preston Bolinger.
His memberships include Pleasant View Church of the Brethren, where he served as a deacon, South Whitley Lions Club, a 50-year member of the Chain Oâ€™ Lakes Barbershop Chorus and served 17 years as a volunteer Emergency Medical Technician for the Whitley County EMS.
Surviving relatives include his wife of 68 years, Elouise; four children, Preston (Sharron) Bolinger of South Whitley, Janet (Rich) Howell of Peru, Lewis (Peggy) Bolinger of South Whitley and Martha (Chris) Trier of South Whitley; a daughter-in-law, Martha Bolinger of South Whitley; 17 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and a sister, Evelyn (Frederick) Myers of South Whitley.
He was preceded in death by a son, Daniel E. Bolinger and a granddaughter, Varidy Sue Bolinger.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Smith & Sons Miller Chapel, South Whitley with Pastor Josh Armstrong of Pleasant View Church of the Brethren officiating. The burial will be in South Whitley Cemetery. The visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and 1 hour prior to the service on Wednesday.
