COLUMBIA CITY — The Whitley County Farmer’s Market kicked off its summer season with a ribbon cutting ceremony Saturday morning. Many of the Chamber of Commerce board members were present along with Mayor Ryan Daniel and Market Master, Chris Lilly.
According to Lilly, the market is full of vendors. Fifty vendors are now signed up for the Saturday morning market from now until Oct. 31.
“This year’s market is bursting with new vendors, we are going to have 50 vendors featuring locally made crafts, jewelry, meats, home baked goods, sweets, vegetables, plants, and many others,” commented Lilly.
Market organizers guess that the market has been in existence since 1999. One of the vendors present that first season is still at it today. Bill Klenke has been bringing his hand carved wood toys and bird houses for the past 12 years.
“Wood working has always been a hobby of mine. Then I retired and decided to keep going with it. I considered starting a business but that would mean another eight to five job and I wanted to be able to do other things. So I bring the bird houses and toys to the market. I enjoy seeing the people and the other vendors. It gives me something to do and makes me a little bit of money,” said Klenke.
Throughout the season, the market will be open each Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the courthouse square. A second location is open on Wednesday in the parking lot of Tractor Supply from 3 to 7 p.m. To see what vendors are bringing or to follow the market online, visit Whitley County Farmer’s Market on Facebook.
