George R. Corkwell, 91, of Ellenton, Fla., and also of Albion, died Saturday, April 9, 2011, at Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Sarasota, Fla.
Mr. Corkwell was a die setter for General Electric in Fort Wayne for 18 years, retiring in 1982.
He was a World War II veteran of the United States Army serving as staff sergeant in the 38th Division, receiving three Purple Hearts.
He was a member of the Big Lake Church of God in Columbia City.
He was a member and past commander of the Disabled American Veterans Association of Bradenton, Fla. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles 1906 of Columbia City, American Legion Post 98 of Columbia City, Veterans of Foreign Wars 5582 of Columbia City, and the National Order of Trench 572 of Palmetto, Fla.
He was born July 2, 1919, in Continental, Ohio, to Edwin S. and Olive Opal (Troyer) Corkwell.
He married Juanita I. Voges Feb. 18, 1950, in Auburn. She survives.
Also surviving are a son, Randall L. (Lesa) Corkwell of Valparaiso; a daughter, Kay Lynn (Jim) Smith of Bradenton, Fla.; two grandchildren, Shannon Lee and Lance Corkwell; and five great-grandchildren, Deakon Lee, Reese Corkwell, Logan Corkwell, Lilly Corkwell, and Maverick Corkwell.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Glen P. Corkwell and Donald D. Corkwell; and two sisters, Mary Catherine McCabe and Barbara Ann Fremion.
Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Feller & Clark Funeral Home, 1860 S. Center St., Auburn. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Auburn.
Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
