Gerald Birch, 84

KENDALLVILLE — Gerald E. “Gene” Birch, age 84 of Ligonier died at 7:35 a.m. Sunday, June 12, 2011 at Parkview Noble Hospital in Kendallville.
He was born to Charlie and Susie (Rarick) Birch in Wolf Lake. He married Violet “June” Poff in 1963, who preceded him in death in 2005. He later married Jean Parks in 2008, she survives.
Birch served in the U.S. Army during WW II and retired from Monsanto in Ligonier after more than 26 years of service. He was a member of the Moose Lodge #836 in Goshen.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Birch of Ligonier; eight children, Michael Birch of Ligonier, Cathy Ratcliff of Goshen, Linda Wertman of Goshen, Gary Birch of Fort Wayne, Michael McDonald of Millersburg, Colleen McDonald of Syracuse, Tammy McDonald of Ligonier, and Bill McDonald of Ligonier; four stepchildren, Jim Williams of California, Debra Short of Kentucky, Steven Williams of Ligonier, and Dan Parks of Albion; Several grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, one brother and one sister.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one grandson, Gary Ratcliff, and six siblings.
A funeral service will be held Thursday at 4 p.m. at Yeager Funeral Home, 1589 Lincolnway South, Ligonier, IN, 46767.
Burial will follow at Sparta Cemetery in Kimmell. Calling is 2 to 4 p.m. prior to the funeral service.
