COLUMBIA CITY — For the past decade, Bud and Karen Rothgeb have been coordinating events at Grace Lutheran Church’s Food Pantry and as of April 1 they are retiring.
The Rothgebs live right down the street from Grace Lutheran Church. The couple has always been active in the church but since Bud retired from DANA in Fort Wayne in 2001, he’s been volunteering at the local food pantry. In 2007, when Karen retired from ITT in Fort Wayne, they became co-directors of the pantry.
The Rothgebs share duties such as buying the food and taking care of donated items from the church and Community Harvest Food Bank in Fort Wayne, which serves nine counties.
“We buy all of the food locally,” said Bud. “Many hunters donate items, such as deer and then Krider’s Meat Processing grinds it into ground meat. The Whitley County Community Foundation picks up the processing fees.”
