GROWING CONCERN: Trees may require new board in S. Whitley

February 27, 2013

SOUTH WHITLEY — In its Tuesday night meeting, trees continued to be a topic of discussion for the South Whitley Town Council.

Julia Robinson, of South Whitley, conducted some research on what the town would need to do in order to form a tree board.

Taking Columbia City’s tree board as an example, Robinson gave her recommendation to council members.

“I would recommend that the town form a committee right now,” Robinson said. “Don’t try to qualify for Tree City USA status right now.”

The Tree City USA program is a national program that provides the framework for community forestry management for cities and towns across America. Communities achieve Tree City USA status by meeting four core standards of sound urban forestry management.

“I think a committee is a good place to start,” said Council President Tony Starkey.
