Julie Marie King
FORT WAYNE — Following her release from a Fort Wayne hospital Friday, an Auburn woman involved in the shooting of a Waterloo police officer has been jailed and charged with several crimes, including, apparently, the murder of her accomplice, Ralph D. Hardiek.
Julie Marie King, 33, of Auburn was charged with felony murder as well as conspiracy to commit murder and aiding in attempted murder, both Class A felonies, resulting from an incident Dec. 15 that involved the shooting of Waterloo Deputy Marshal Stephen Brady.
DeKalb County’s prosecutor was in court this morning and was unable to answer questions as to why King is being charged with Hardiek’s murder.
A spokesperson at the prosecutor’s office said there had been at least one other inquiry today regarding the charges.
Hardiek, according to a police report, was killed in a shootout with police after having been hit by an unknown number of bullets. King was also wounded in the shootout.
In the probable cause affidavit from the DeKalb County Superior Court II, prosecutors cite Indiana Code 35-42-1-1(2) as the precedent for charging King with murder.
That code reads “kills another human being while committing or attempting to commit arson, burglary, child molesting, consumer product tampering, criminal deviate conduct, kidnapping, rape, robbery, human trafficking, promotion of human trafficking, sexual trafficking of a minor, or carjacking...”
It is not clear why King is being charged with killing Hardiek.
Sometime before 3 a.m. on Dec. 15, 2011, according to an Indiana State Police press release, King and Hardiek went to a residence on County Road 35, just north of Waterloo to seek assistance for a vehicle that was said to have been stuck.
Two Waterloo officers were sent to find the pair along with their vehicle and to render assistance to them.
Just after 3 a.m., Brady, 47, a 13-year veteran of the Waterloo Police Department, encountered the couple in the area of Railroad and Center streets in the town of Waterloo. It was during this encounter that Brady was shot in the face by Hardiek.
Brady was recently released from the hospital and is recovering from his wounds.
