Helen L. Crowell, 92, of Columbia City, died at 2:10 a.m. Sunday, July 29, 2012, at The Oaks Living Center where she had been a resident since October 2011.
She was born Feb. 14, 1920, in Huntington, a daughter of Ora and Alice B. (Neal) Ward. Her formative years were spent in Huntington where she graduated from high school.
On Oct. 22, 1948, she was united in marriage to Walter D. â€śBudâ€ť Crowell. They made their home in Huntington until their retirement in 1984, when they moved to Webster Lake. Mr. Crowell died Dec. 8, 1987. In 1990, Helen moved to Columbia City.
She retired from Dana Weatherhead in 1984, with 40 years of service.
Her memberships formerly included Eagles #1906 Auxiliary, Theo Club and Huntington Firemenâ€™s Womenâ€™s Auxiliary.
Surviving relatives include a daughter, Sharon (Michael) Mathews of Martinsville; two grandchildren, Michele Mathews and Sean Mathews, both of Martinsville; five great-grandchildren and a brother, Marvin Ward of North Webster.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother and a sister, Walter Ward and Mary Jane Barber.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The burial will be in South Park Cemetery. The visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
