Helen Furnas, 81

Helen M. Furnas, 81, formerly of Columbia City, died at 8 p.m. Friday, March 4, 2011 at the Peabody Home, North Manchester where she had been a resident since 2002.
She was born Aug. 2, 1929 in Cass County, Mich., a daughter of Floyd and Helen Margaret (Kantz) Adams. Her formative years were spent in Michigan. She graduated from Constantine High School.
On Oct. 22, 1949 she was united in marriage to Lawrence E. Furnas. They made their home in Fort Wayne until 1964 when they moved to rural Columbia City. Mr. Furnas died April 5, 1995.
She retired from Dana Weatherhead, Columbia City with 22 years of service.
Surviving relatives include four children, Dianna L. (Ralph) Shafter of Laotto, Valerie J. (Brian) Menzie of Columbia City, Steven A. (Vicki) Furnas of Wabash and Ross A. (Jodie) Furnas of Larwill; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and a sister, Frances Mayer of Jones, Mich.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by four sisters and three brothers, Elizabeth Knapp, Ruth Wilson, Maxine Strawser, Rita Churchill, Luther Adams, Robert Adams and George Adams.
The funeral service was today at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The burial was in Greenhill Cemetery.
