Helen Margaret Adella (Brown) Kreiger-Ziegler, 92, of Huntington, passed away at 6:47 p.m. Saturday, March 3, 2012, at Parkview Huntington Hospital.
Helen was born Nov. 27, 1919, in Huntington County, the daughter of J. Clayton and Esther Luella (Ziegler) Brown.
She was a 1937 graduate of Huntington Township High School.
She continued her education at Huntington College, earning an A. B. Degree, a Masters Degree from Ball State University, and also attended Indiana University, Purdue University and Princeton University.
Helen married Earl Kreiger on May 15, 1941 in Huntington and he preceded her in death May 13, 1990.
Her second marriage was to Wilbur âBillâ Ziegler on Sept. 23, 1995. He also preceded her in death on Sept. 7, 2006.
Helen taught for 17 years at Huntington Township High School and went on to be a Counselor and Dean of Girls for 15 years at Huntington High School, which became Huntington North High School.
She was one of four people who started Purdue Extension in Fort Wayne in 1941.
After retiring from the school corporation, Helen continued working for Larry Wells Real Estate, was a job developer for Pathfinder Services, a counselor for the Samaritan Center, owned and operated Retail Wallpaper Store, was a bookkeeper for Elliott Insurance, a pre-need counselor for Bailey-Love Mortuary and a bookkeeper and events coordinator for La Fontaine Golf Club.
Helen was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Huntington, where she held several offices at the church as well as United Methodist Women.
Other memberships included Eastern Star, Child Welfare Club, Sigma Eta Fine Arts Sorority, Huntington Retired Teachers Association, Indiana State Retired Teachers, and Delta Kappa Gamma.
She served on the Mt. Hope Cemetery Board and Council on Aging, and member of Huntington University Alumni Board, Huntington College Centennial Committee, and Community Strings Board.
In 1995, Helen was chosen Outstanding Alumni at Huntington College for volunteer work with mailings, etc.
She was an avid supporter of Huntington North boys and girls basketball, Columbia City girls basketball and canterbury girls basketball.
Survivors include one son, Wayne (Debbie) Kreiger of Columbia City; one daughter, Jayne (Jim) Jagger of South Whitley; two sisters, Garnett Williams of Michigan City and Carol Lauterbach of Arizona; five grandchildren, Scott (Stacie) Kreiger, Steven (Jeanne) Kreiger, Sally (Terry) Wherry, Jason (Amy) Jagger and Jarred (Daidra) Jagger; two step grandchildren, Angela (Steve) Miller and Andrew (Trisha) Bills and several great-grandchildren.
Her parents, husbands and brother, Max C. Brown, preceded her in death.
Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Bailey-Love Mortuary.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Bailey-Love Mortuary with one hour of visitation prior to the service.
Rev. Joseph Haney will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Huntington.
